Welcome to our Second Life professional network!
We are an informal group of business professionals that meets in the virtual reality system Second Life to share knowledge and explore different perspectives in the fields of business planning and risk management. Our group originated in early 2008 with a series of professional guest appearances in accounting and finance classes that were hosted by Professors Michael Kraten and Maureen Kraten at a pair of AACSB accredited colleges of business.
We found a home in cyberspace in late 2008 by joining the group Second Life Association of Certified Public Accountants (SLACPA), a creation of the real-world Maryland Association of CPAs (MACPA). The SLACPA maintains CPA Island, a virtual conference center and educational campus that is open to all professional members. By obtaining a free Second Life “avatar” account and joining the SLACPA, our colleagues enjoy full access to all CPA Island events and facilities.
Our group has established no registration requirements, no monetary dues collection system, and no formal organizational structure. Any one around the world with a legitimate interest in business planning and risk management is welcome to join our sessions.
LUNCH & LEARN SESSIONS
In October 2009, we began (and now continue) to host a series of “Lunch & Learn” sessions about the fields of Business Planning and Enterprise Risk Management on CPA Island. Individuals around the world purchase live television broadcasts of these sessions via the MACPA’s internet based webcasting system; our group members also join us in avatar form at no cost as audience members within our virtual broadcast studio.
Webcast purchasers must register with the MACPA as members or non-members and then register for each Virtual Seminar by clicking on the event’s link in the MACPA’s event calendar. Upon completing the feedback survey after the conclusion of each session, participants receive Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credit for their time!
